my lottery story

a few years ago, i was in Harbin China. one day, a friend called me, "you have gotten a lottery coinciding with your car plate' number from traffic broadcast, and you need to make sure through a phone.' so i was very exciting, for i never got before. i told the unit my name and ID and knew i can get 2000 yuan. then, i informed my some close friends the good news, and exactly lunch time coming so i treated my friends for celebrating my lucky number 9588 until dinner at night. i remember that day was friday so i thought next monday i would go to there getting money; however, when i went to there, i was told it was overdue i can't get any at all. because my friend didn't tell me what day expired. so what. i was still happy because i had ever had a lottery even though i didn't get any money.

Qingdao

Part One

My hometown, Qingdao, is a beautiful, charming, classic and modern city. It lies in the north of China and on the seashore of the Yellow Sea – part of the Pacific. It has about 8 million people living there. Some people know about my hometown because of the Tsingtao Beer that can be found in some liquor stores in Canada, and Qingdao used to be called Tsingtao.

Qingdao is a new city in China, which began in 1897 when Germany took it over. At that time, it was a very small rural area where some fishermen and their families gathered. After Germany occupied it, they built ports, factories, hospitals and churches, and Qingdao gradually became a small city. Germany also built pillboxes and there were some German soldiers resident in Qingdao. During World War I, Germany and Japan fought each other in Qingdao for control of Qingdao. In the end, Japan defeated Germany and Japan wanted to get Qingdao instead of Germany; even though China was one of the victors in the war, Japan wanted to get possession of Qingdao, and tried many methods to do so. Because of this situation, the students in Beijing held a big demonstration to ask the government to take back Qingdao. In the end, the China’s deputation in Paris refused to sign the documents that showed all German rights in Qingdao would transfer to Japan. That demonstration happened on May 4, 1919, and now May 4 is China’s Youth Day in order to commemorate the young students’ struggle for China. But during World War II, Qingdao was occupied by Japan, and it was returned to China in 1945. Since 1949, when the new China was founded, Qingdao has been developed very much especially after the 1980s. Now, it is a beautiful and modern city; however, it is still a classic city with many old buildings varying in different styles: Chinese, German, and other European countries’ styles. Now most of the old buildings are preserved and in good maintenance. After 1993, Qingdao extended to the east, so many new high buildings stand in the east of Qingdao – the new urban area; furthermore, old buildings are still standing in the west of Qingdao – the old urban area.
The next will be on soon...

Mu Mian Hua

It's one kind of kapok. Mu Mian Hua is its Chinese name. It is the Flower of Guangzhou (my hometown).

It's very special. Unlike other plants, it flowers in the early spring but its leaves begin to sprout in summer.

How to buy a house in Edmonton

As you know, the economy of Edmonton has been becoming better and better since the oil sands were found. Some experts forecast that the house's price will still rise in later 3 years, though it is double to 2006. So a house is not only a place where you can live in, but also a good investment.

Before you buy a house, the first thing you should do is to determine how much money you can afford. If you have enough money to pay off your house, it is perfect. But most of people besides me need banks’ help. So you have to talk to the bank to pre-qualify your mortgage. That is how much money you can borrow. The bank will need some information from you: the down payment, debt load, and your credit history to decide whether or how much money they willing to lend you.

The Down Payment for a new comer is at least 30% and the bank will not ask you any further questions if you have that kind of money. For people who have great full-time jobs, the down payment can be 0% to 20%.And the bank will ask next is “what is your monthly debt load?” If you owe too much money, the bank will not lend you anything to avoid their adventures. The credit is determined by the Beacon Score. Good credit will get you good rate.

The next thing you need to know for yourself is the interest rate. The current prime rate is 4.85%. There are two interest rate options: Variable Rate Open and Fixed Rate Close. The variable interest rate open is based on the prime rate, it equals to Prime Rate minus 0.40. And the Fixed Rate is now about 5.99% for five years. The mortgage term always ranges from 6 months to 40 years. The shorter term, the less interest you have to pay. For example,if you borrow 2 hundred thousand dollars ($200,000), rate is: 5.99% fixed, payment term is 25 years, your monthly payment is 12 hundred and seventy-eight dollars ($1,278) and you need about 52 thousand dollars($52,000) annual income to qualify.

Now you know how much money you can borrow. You just start looking at houses. There are three kinds of houses: Single house, Town-house and Apartment. Single houses and town-houses'styles are 2 storey, Bi-level, Bungalow and Duplex. The apartment,on the other hand, can be high rise or low rise and has Bachelor, Studio, one bedroom, two bedrooms, or even three bedrooms suite.

Location is very important. Your house will be appreciated faster if it is a good location. The North-east corner houses in Edmonton are usually the Cheapest. The South and West houses are more expensive, especially nearby the University of Alberta and the West Edmonton Mall.

You can buy a house from Owner directly such as Comfree or through a realtor for example ReMax. It's up to you! But the purchasing prices of the two ways are almost the same. The realtor will give lots of professional advice to save your money and trouble.

You have selected a house, now is the time to write up an offer, and sign the purchase contract which is prepared by the realtor. The realtor will help you to determine the price by checking sold properties in the same area, and also help you to write down the possession date, financing schedule, home inspection condition and the Condo documents review condition. By the way, the Condo Fee includes Insurance, Parking lot assignment, Management Fee. Most of houses have condo fee except single houses.

As soon as the contract is accepted by the seller, you will go ahead to ask bank to approve mortgage, ask inspector to inspect your house, and ask lawyer to review all the documents for you. After that, you have already bought your house.
Enjoy your house with your new life!

DIY

I am considering about reparing minor problems and maintainning regularly my car by myself.
If you go to a dealer, the price is very high. I went a car dealer to repair my car and they replaced a gasket, changed transmission oil, renewed the belt and replaced one brake disk. For this work, I paid $1300. However, when I visited car parts store, I found that the total price of those used car parts is no more then $200. I thought I am giving the money away and desided to learn auto maintainace and repairation. Why we give money away while you could do it yourself. Therefore, take your spare time and learn how to maintain your car.

To Be A Good Mother

So far, I can not be called a qualified mother to my 3-year old daughter. Before I immigrated to Canada, I usually worked long hour every weekday and and spent little time on my daughter. It is my mother who invests most of her time and energy to take care of my daughter. I feel so appreciated for the kindness of my mother. Now my husband and I am in Canada while my daughter still stay in my home country. As planned, we will bring her to Canada in the next year, so I can not see her, play with her and hug her until next May, it's really a long time, I miss her so much. How can I be a good mother in a remote country? I tell myself that I must do something special to maintain a close relationship with my daughter although she doesn't live me.

If you have any good ideas to be a good mother, please share with me.

Moral Dilemma

This is the story: The Sheriff of Nottingham captured Little John and Robin Hood and imprisoned them in his maximum-security dungeon. Maid Marion begged the Sheriff for their release, pleading her love for Robin. The Sheriff agreed to release them only if Maid Marion spent the night with him. To this she agreed.
The next morning the Sheriff released his prisoners. Robin at once demanded that Marion tell him how she persuaded the Sheriff to let them go free. Marion confessed the truth, and was bewildered when Robin abused her, calling her slut, and saying that he never wanted to see her again.
At this Little John defended her, inviting her to leave Sherwood with him and promising life-long devotion. She accepted and they rode away together.
According to the above story, we could put 24 orders of the four persons: Robin, Marion, Little John and the Sheriff, which we consider they showed the most morality and honesty. Who was the best one?
First, let us analyze the Sheriff. He arrested Little John and Robin because of their faults, but maybe no any criminal reasons. The story hasn't mentioned this. However, he used his position's power to ask Maid Marion for her one night's company, it is against moral principles. So he was the worst one for his misuse of authority, defection of love to his wife and philandering.
Second, how about Robin Hood? He maybe has made some mistakes, so he was arrested. Obviously, his stubbornness and selfishness caused him to leave girl-friend. He preferred staying in prison for ever to losing pudicity of love. He was too possessive to accept Maid's help. A stupid man he was, so he wasn't favorable.
Next, Little John was so thankful for Maid Marion's devotion. He was a person cherishing other's help and know how to render back. He understood his benefactor's puzzledom, even though she lost principles. Therefore, he was a good one.
Finally, Maid Marion was a brave lady. She could try her best to win her boy-friend's freedom in despite of losing her pudicity. At least, she hasn't made any mistakes. Of cause, she did company the Sheriff one night because she did be cornered for the egregious requirement. She had to do so! Most of women, besides me, like her for her selflessness.
However, according to the psychologist, the story only showed us three emphases: freedom, love, and power. It is no any right answers just based on different opinions. In contemporary social, materialists like power best because power brings them benefit and actualizes their aims. Some people are hooked on love, they sovereign love is necessary; on the other hand, other people realize freedom is the most important…
Based on above analyses, I think if no love, life will be colorless, even though people have freedom or power. So in conclusion, Maid Marion is the best one. Love is most important in our lives.
How do you think? What is your opinion?

My Love Story

My husband and I almost fell into love at first sight at the same time. Our love stories started since we knew each other 17 years ago in Anshan University in China.
Rock, my husband, was not only my classmate but also my desk-mate when we were studying mechanical major in Anshan University. My mark was always the worst in our class, I failed to go up to the next grade in the second term. However, Rock never looked down on me. In contrast, he often helped me; furthermore, he required to repeat the second term in order to accompany me, though his grade was enough excellent. At that time, I was so thankful for his encouragement that I decided to love him for ever.
When we graduated in 1996, we came back to Shanghai and started our careers. At first, Rock was only a mechanical engineer in a small plant. After several years, his experience and talent were found by Rotec, a famous company whose headquarter lay in Sweden. As a technical manager, he worked hard and didn’t stop working for the cooperation until immigrated into Canada. He tried his best to earn money for our family. Every day, we were busy but happy.
Rock was very handsome and attractive. That is the reason why a lot of young girls had a crush on him. I am always proud of that I am his wife, let the girls admire me.
During the first several months of emigration, we had to separate. He was still busy with his job in Shanghai and I was eager to attend program at Nait. We had each different lives then. When he came back to Edmonton again several weeks ago, I was so joyful. At the same time, I was extremely sad when he told me that his girl-friend had been pregnant accidentally. We have been spouse for more than 10 years but no children. Their baby was inculpable despite they had already made mistakes. I thought over and over, finally, decided to divorce from Rock to return him freedom. We did do! But now, I still can’t stop loving him…
My love story sounds good for its romantic beginning and dramatic final. Obviously, there is a great deal of temptations in the world. Every one needs more perseverance in facing kinds of difficulties. I have to persuade myself to understand the true meaning of LOVE: If you love someone, please don’t mind whether you can own him or her for ever, just bless him or her, it's enough.

Welcome to a new semester of fun and excitement. I hope you enjoy this class, and that you enjoy using this space to explore different styles of writing. Remember that this exercise is designed to improve your writing fluency, so it is more important to get your ideas down than it is to get your grammar right.

If you like, you can use the edit function to go back later and change your spelling, grammar, punctuation or word choice. You can also add photos, pictures or videos.

Cheers,
Vivienne
